Renting in Mérida with cats? What to confirm before a video tour

Before you book a video tour, ask the owner to confirm in writing that your exact number of cats can live in the unit for your full rental term. If it’s a condo, ask the administrator for the relevant building rule too. A listing marked “pet-friendly” is a place to start.

Send one specific question

Try this message in Spanish, adding your dates and the number of cats: “Hola, me interesa rentar de enero a diciembre. Tengo dos gatos de interior. ¿El propietario acepta a los dos durante todo el contrato? ¿Me podrían compartir el reglamento del condominio sobre mascotas?”

A Montecristo rental listing makes pet acceptance subject to the owner’s approval. If the reply is simply “yes, pets are allowed,” ask whether that includes both cats in this particular unit. If the owner agrees but the building rule mentions just one animal, settle the discrepancy before scheduling.

Ask the camera to linger at the edges

Start at the entrance. Where would a cat go if the front door opened while you were bringing in groceries? Then ask the agent to show each opening window, slide the screen and film the frame and corners close up. A mosquito screen can look intact on a phone while sitting loose in its track.

At the balcony, follow the camera from floor to ceiling. Look for gaps at the sides and above the railing. Cats Protection recommends a sturdy screen designed for cats or a secure enclosure. If changes would be needed, ask who can authorize installation, who pays and when it can be done. Until then, plan to keep that door closed.

Before reserving, put the agreement on paper

Ask for an itemized move-in total in pesos. If there’s a pet charge, clarify whether it’s a refundable deposit or a fee, what deductions apply and when a refund would be due. Compare the written pet permission with the proposed lease. In a furnished home, photograph existing marks on sofas, doors and screens together at handover.

Send us your dates, budget, number of cats and a listing you like. We can check the pet policy with the owner and arrange a live tour focused on the rooms and openings your cats will actually use.
